Bloomsburg Comes From Behind to Take Series Finale from Baseball

BLOOMSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University baseball team was leading Bloomsburg 7-1 before the Huskies scored nine unanswered runs to defeat the Warriors 10-7 on Monday afternoon at Danny Litwhiler Field.

The Warriors drop to 25-9 overall and 7-6 in the PSAC East while the Huskies win the season series two to one and improve to 18-12-1 on the season and 10-4-1 in the conference.

Freshman Jack Rothenhausler clubbed his 4th and 5th home runs of the season and finished the day 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Since being inserted into the starting lineup regularly on March 25, the Bethlehem native has gone 17-of-39 (.436) with five home runs, five doubles, two triples, 15 RBI and 10 runs in nine games.

Redshirt senior Brock Kauffman went 1-for-4, which included his 13th career home run to go with two RBI and a run. CJ Peechatka and Ben Piripavel each went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Making his ninth start of the season, Brent Francisco (3-1) earned the no decision after pitching 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out 13. Francisco raised his strikeout total on the season to 72, ranking tops in the conference.

The Warriors bullpen struggled in relief, allowing six runs on eight hits across two innings of work.

ESU and Bloomsburg combined to hit nine home runs in the series finale.

Notables

- Kauffman collected his 145th career RBI on the afternoon and is now two shy of setting the school record held by Chris Knott (2011-14) with 146. The Blue Ball, Pa. native totaled his 69th career extra-base hits which puts him alone at second in program history and 13 off the record.

- Crossing home plate once today, Rojas moved into fifth all-time for career runs with 143. The redshirt senior remains second in program history for stolen bases with 70.

- Rojas increased his team-high on-base streak to 17 games with a walk but saw his 10-game hit steak come to an end

- The Warriors stole six bases to move their season total to 95, which ranks second in the PSAC and ninth in all of NCAA DII

- Head Coach John Kochmansky continues to near his 400th career win as sits at 393

How it Happened

ESU jumped on the Huskies early, scoring three runs on thee hits in the top of the first inning to grab a 3-0 lead. Piripavel got the Warriors started with a double before stealing third and coming around to score on Peechatka's two-bagger down the right field line. Rothenhausler followed by clearing the bases on a two-run blast to left field to extend ESU's advantage.

The Huskies cut the Warriors' edge to 3-1 in the bottom of the second as Carter Chasanov delivered a one-out solo home run to left field.

Rothenhausler continued to swing a hot bat during ESU's at-bats in the top of the fourth as the freshman led off with his second home run of the afternoon to reextend the Warriors' three-run lead at 4-1.

With one out in top of fifth inning, the Warriors used three hits and a walk to push their lead to 7-1. Rojas worked a free pass to set the table for Piripavel, who delivered a running scoring double after a throwing error by the Huskies allowed both runners to advance an extra base. Kauffman stepped to the plate next and on a 2-0 count, the redshirt senior sent the ball over the left field fence to put ESU ahead by six.

Bloomsburg got two runs back in the home half of the inning as Brady Gibble homered to center field to with two outs to make the score 7-3 in favor of ESU.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Chasanov launched his second home run of the game to get the Huskies within three at 7-4.

The Huskies broke out in a big way in the bottom of the seventh inning, plating four runs on five hits to take their first lead of the afternoon at 8-7. Kyle OFier tied the game at 7-7 on the game's seventh home run before pinch hitter Bryce Porter singled down the right field line to put Bloomsburg ahead.

Bloomsburg added a pair of insurance runs in their final at-bats as Jonathan Labarbera and OFier homered to make the score 10-7.

Up Next

With Tuesday's game against Saint Rose shifted to Wednesday, April 27, the Warriors turn their attention to a non-conference matchup with Post on Thursday at Municipal Stadium.
