Gorham Eclipses 42-Year-Old Discus Record at 16th Annual All-American Meet

EAST STROUDSBURG – Freshman Cole Gorham surpassed a 42-year-old program record in the discus as the East Stroudsburg University men's track and field team was victorious in six different events at 16th Annual All-American Meet on Saturday afternoon from Eiler-Martin Stadium.

On his way to a first place finish in the event, Gorham launched the disc 51.85m (170-1), which cleared the mark of 168-11 set back in 1980 by Dane Cochran, who was in attendance at today's meet. 

Also securing PSAC qualifying times were Sean Roberts (400m), Ryan Ditty (400m) and Caleb Carney (400m hurdles). 

Running Highlights

The Warriors recorded a trio of top-five finishes in the 3000m steeplechase with Luke Valdevit taking the top spot at a personal-best time of 9:58.18, followed by Evan Wooby in fourth at 10:24.63 and Koodsha Manjaro right behind in fifth after clocking a 10:47.01.

Tyler Boone led ESU to five top-10 finishes in the 400m as he took first place with a personal-best time of 48.72, ranking eighth in school history. Roberts finished fourth with a PSAC time of 49.97, followed by Ryan Ditty in seventh with a conference mark of 50.33. Zandrew Bowe (9th – 50.65) and Zephyr Crestwell (10th – 50.73) rounded out the finishes for ESU.

In the 400m hurdles, Caleb Carney was the top finisher with a conference qualifying time of 55.92 while Nasir Kyle took fourth at 58.30. Liam Beifus was in fifth at 58.89 and Daniel Daley rounded out ESU in eighth at 59.79.

Roberts was .02 seconds shy of a conference time in the 100m at 11.17 on his way to fifth place finish while Esteves was 10th with a mark of 11.26.

In the 800m, Austyn Hamilton took third place with a time of 1:58.81 and Jordan Chong-Gayle was fourth after finishing in 1:58.91.

Brian McGarrity kicked off the day for the Warriors by finishing as the runner-up in the 5000m after clocking a personal-best time of 15:43.22 and Camden Shaffer took 11th with a time of 16:34.69.

In the 4x100m relay, ESU notched a runner-up finish as Roberts, Boone, Esteves and Austin Nice ran a season-best time of 42.26.

Making his outdoor debut, Brendan Solano recorded a 10th place finish in the 1500m at 4:31.02.

ESU recorded four top-10 finishers in the 110m hurdles, led by Ivan Hicks in fourth at 15.75 and Daniel Daley right behind in fifth with a time of 15.83. Nasir Kyle was seventh (16.43) and Liam Beifus (16.77) took ninth place.

The Warriors wrapped up the day on the track by taking first and second in the 4x400m relay as Crestwell, Boone, Ditty and Boyd ran the fastest time at 3:21.63. Bowe, Roberts, Esteves and Carney were the runners-up at 3:22.28.

Field Event Highlights

While breaking the school record in the discus, Cole Gorham grabbed first place and Issac Almoney wasn't far behind in third with a personal-best throw of 46.78m (153-6), which is ninth all-time in program history. Blackwell rounded out the finishes in sixth after recording a mark of 42.82m (140-6).

On top of a record breaking performance, Cole Gorham was the top finisher in the shot put with a throw of 15.23m (49-11 3/4), followed by Almoney in third at 15.02m (49-3 1/2) and Will Mattei in fifth with a mark of 14.35m (47-1).

In the hammer throw, Almoney and Blackwell were fourth and fifth respectively while each recording personal-best marks. Almoney recorded a toss of 56.23m (184-6), ranking third in program history while Blackwell uncorked a throw of 55.61m (182-5) to jump up to fourth all-time.

Zach Nissley claimed the top spot in the javelin after recording a throw of 56.77m (186-3) and Seth Leonard took third after recording a mark of 54.10m (177-6).

In the long jump, Jack Gorham led the way for ESU in fourth with a mark of 6.80m (22-3 ¾), followed by Hicks (7th – 6.17m), Daley (8th – 6.10m) and Aaron Sanchez (9th – 6.03m). Hicks returned to earn a runner-up finish in the triple jump with a mark of 13.20m (43-3 ¾).

Sanchez finished tied for third place in the high jump after clearing the bar at 1.90m (6-2 ¾) while Romanley Turnier was fifth at 1.90m (6-2 ¾).

Grant Fox was the runner-up in the pole vault after propelling himself over the bar at 4.20m (13-9 ¼).

ESU hits the road next Thursday through Saturday for the Penn Relays and the Carol & John Covert Classic at Lehigh.
