No. 9/10 Warriors Win Will Abele Women’s Open with Six First-Place Finishers

Winning their respective weight classes were Alanna Barberio, Emily Klein, Mia Macaluso, Grace Kaczanowski, Zoe Gress and Damiana Racciatti.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Led by six first-place finishes and 12 total medalists, the No. 9/10 East Stroudsburg University women's wrestling team claimed first-place at the Will Abele Open with 29 points among 17 teams at Ursinus' Floy Lewis Bakes Center on Sunday.

Winning their respective weight classes for ESU were Alanna Barberio (109), No. 6 Emily Klein (116), No. 7 Mia Macaluso (123), Grace Kaczanowski (130), No. 7 Zoe Gress (143) and Damiana Racciatti (170).

Earning medals for a top-six finish were Haley Delia (2nd place, 101), Gianna Amendola (3rd place, 130), Rachel DeGiulio (3rd place, 136), Shola Cascen (3rd place, 170), Waverly KaneLong (4th place, 116) and Carmela Cancelmo (4th place, 123).

ESU took first with 29 points, followed by Elmira (19 pts.) in second place. MIT tied with host Urinus for third place, while Alvernia, Delaware Valley and Western New England each tied for fifth with five points.

  • Alanna Barberio faced a pair of Elmira Screaming Eagles at 109 and defeated both Kaitlyn Potter and Ariyanna Orosco with a pin and tech fall, respectively to earn first-place.
  • No. 6 Emily Klein cruised at 116, with a fall over Buctown Wrestling's Soraya Safforld and tech falls over teammate Waverly KaneLong and Ursinus' Jocelyn Lass in the first-place bout.
  • No. 7 Mia Macaluso picked up three wins to take first place at 123, with tech falls over Drexel's Dorthea West and teammate Carmela Cancelmo before defeating Ursinus' Kalli Roskos by a 1408 decision in the first-place match.
  • Grace Kaczanowski went 3-0 on the day for first-place at 130, with two pins and a 4-2 decision win over MIT's Viveca Pannell in the first-place match.
  • Zoe Gress, who is nationally-ranked at 155, wrestled at 143 and picked up three wins to claim first. She defeated Del Val's Kinder by fall, Elmira's Monterrosa by tech fall and MIT's Pannell by a 10-4 decision to earn first-place.
  • Damiana Racciatti took first place at 170, with a tech fall over Rider's Jodi Holder, a fall over Alvernia's Andrea Wilmoth and earned a 14-6 decision against Elmira's Tammy Nguyen in the finals.
  • At 101 with a round robin format, Haley Delia defeated three of four of her foes. She picked up pins of Elmira's Taylor Goguen and Alvernia's Nevaeh Bleveins before falling to first-place Skylynn Tomlinson of Elmira. She took second-place after Rider's Sheila Cortez bowed out with an injury forfeit.
  • Gianna Amendola took third-place at 130, bouncing back from a decision loss to eventual runner-up Viveca Pannell by pinning Cedar Crest's Brooke Holley and earning an 8-2 decision over Natalie Morales of Buctown Wrestling.
  • Shola Cascen earned third at 170, posting a 4-1 record on the day. After wins over Calista Kolmer (Urinus) and Francesca Clarke (Rider) via pin, she suffered her lone loss of the day by tech fall against eventual runner-up Tammy Nguyen of Elmira. Cascen bounced back with a fall against Jodi Holder (Rider) and closed her day with a fall against Delaware Valley's Caira Jaynes to claim third plac.
  • Waverly KaneLong claimed fourth place at 116 with a pin in the quarterfinal, a loss to teammate Emily Klein, a dramatic pin at 5:54 over Alisa Safforld, before dropping the 3rd place match to Victoria Orender of Western New England.
  • Carmela Cancelmo earned a tech fall win over WNE's Sabrina Sedor before falling to her nationally-ranked teammate in Macaluso. She bounced back with a pin against Cornell's Kate Zavuholnik. She fell to Bridgette Schoultz (Delaware Valley) in the third-place match.
