EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team opened the 2023-24 season in impressive fashion as the Warriors shutout Elmira, 56-0, in their season-opening dual for both teams on Wednesday evening inside Koehler Fieldhouse.
ESU, who matched their largest victory since February 9, 2019, when the Warriors defeated RPI by a final score of 56-0, began the campaign 1-0 for the second consecutive season while the Soaring Eagles dropped to 0-1.
Notables
- Jacob Remolina got the match off with a bang at 149 pounds as the senior pinned Elmira's Patrick Stauring in 55 seconds to put the Warriors ahead 6-0. Remolina improved his career record to 2-3 in duals while collecting his ninth fall.
- Following a forfeit at 165, senior Sergio Cespedes grinded out a 10-9 decision over the Soaring Eagles' Hollis Berry to increase ESU's lead to 15-0. The Woodbridge, N.J. native moved to 2-4 all-time in duals.
- After another forfeit at 174 made the score 21-0 in favor of ESU, the Warriors ripped off back-to-back falls in a blink of an eye as juniors Luke Ciampa (184) and Ajay Hiller (197) pinned their opponents in 38 seconds and 36 seconds respectively. Bumping up two weight classes, Ciampa racked up his 16 career fall and improved his overall record in duals to 10-4 while Hiller totaled his 11th pin and moved his career duals record to 10-10.
- Layton Schmick impressed in his ESU debut as the freshman produced a 17-1 technical fall over Elmira's Darius Green
- Collecting forfeit wins for the Warriors was freshman Jason Athey (125), sophomore Ben Makaritis (133), freshman Shawn Redfield (141), junior Jack Spahn (157) and sophomore Robert Burke (174). Additionally, it marked the first collegiate wins for Athey and Redfield, who were making their ESU debuts
