Men’s Wrestling Earns 42-8 Dual Win Over Scranton

EAST STROUDSBURG – The East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling kept it rolling against Scranton as the Warriors downed the Royals, 42-8, in a dual on Wednesday night inside Koehler Fieldhouse.

The Warriors opened the season 2-0 for the second straight campaign while the Royals slipped to 0-1 following their first dual of the year.

Notables
  • Beginning the match at 125, Jason Athey moved to 2-0 in duals and 5-0 on the season as the freshman finished off Scranton's Joseph Cappello at the end of the second period with a technical fall (20-5, 5:00)
  • At 133, sophomore Ben Makaritis produced a pin of the Royals' Kevin Cordero at 1:42 in the first period to extend the Warriors' lead to 11-0
  • Shawn Redfield pushed ESU's advantage to 17-0 following his bout at 141 as the freshman pinned Scranton's Shkeb Nadir late in the third period (5:51)
  • After the Royals trimmed their deficit to 17-5, senior Eric Falleni picked up back points in the closing seconds of the match to produce a major decision (14-5) at 157, making the score 21-5 in favor of ESU. Falleni moved to 31-19 in his career and 7-7 in duals.
  • Following another victory from Scranton (21-8), the Warriors closed out the dual strong beginning with Luke Ciampa at 174 as the junior used a late take down for a major decision (12-3) against the Royals' Jeremiah Oakes. In his career, Ciampa is now 42-14 overall and 12-4 in duals.
  • Making his dual debut at 184, freshman Jarrett Pantuso produced a technical fall at the 5:48 mark in the third period to stretch the Warriors' advantage to 30-8
  • Ajay Hiller continued to dominate the opposition at 197 as the junior pinned Scranton's John Sklavounos in 1:34 to make the score 36-8. Hill moved to 28-21 overall in his career and 11-10 in duals.
  • Layton Schmick flexed his muscles in the first period as the freshman pinned Scranton's Sean Cordaro in 44 seconds to clinch a 42-8 victory for the Warriors. Schmick continued to impress in the first week-plus with the Warriors as he improved to 6-0 overall with four falls and 2-0 in duals.
