GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Senior Eric Falleni (157) and freshman Layton Schmick (285) notched first-place finishes at their respective weight classes to lead the East Stroudsburg University men's wrestling team to a successful day at the Nassau Open on Sunday inside the Main Gym.
Falleni captured a first-place finish for the second time in his career as the Byram, N.J. native went 4-0 while registering one major decision, fall and technical fall. Falleni improved to 16-5 on the season and 44-22 overall in his career.
The reigning PSAC Wrestling Athlete of the Week lived up to the hype as Schmick took first place in his second straight event and third time this season. The freshman went 4-0 with a fall and major decision, moving to a stellar 15-1 in his first season wearing the red and black.
Recording runner-up finishes at their weight classes for ESU were seniors Jacob Remolina (149), Sergio Cespedes (165) and Matthew Richardson (197). Remolina cruised through his first four matches with a trio of pins before falling to teammate Patrick Noonan, who was wrestling as unattached, in the finals. On his way to a second place finish at 165, Cespedes used a decision, fall, major decision and forfeit victory before dropping the finals to Hofstra's Greyson Harris. After receiving a bye in the opening round, Richardson produced a medical forfeit win and major decision before stumbling to teammate Isaiah Reinert, who was wrestling as unattached, in the championship.
Junior Luke Ciampa impressed en route to a third place finish at 165 as the junior dropped his opening match before ripping off six consecutive victories which included two tech falls, two major decisions and a pin. The Jefferson, N.J. native eclipsed the 50-win mark for his career as he improved to 53-14 overall. Ajay Hiller produced a 5-1 record using three pins and a technical fall on his way to a third place finish at 197 pounds.
