No. 23 Baseball Splits Twin Bill, Series with Crimson Hawks

INDIANA – The 23rd ranked East Stroudsburg University baseball team scored 10 runs on 10 hits to win the opener, leading the Warriors to a doubleheader split against IUP on Monday at Owen J. Dougherty Field.

The Warriors (2-2) routed the Crimson Hawks in game one, 10-0, but IUP (2-2) responded with a 9-1 victory in the series finale to earn the split.

ESU and IUP each went 2-2 in the four-game series. The Crimson Hawks won the first game last Friday, 4-2, before the Warriors rebounded with a 2-1 win in game two.

Notables
  • In the opener, Jeremy Piatkiewicz (1-for-4) delivered the Warriors first home run of the season with a two-run blast in the top of the first inning
     
  • Dating back to 2003, Cameron Hubbard registered the 30th grand slam in program history as the junior cleared the bases in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 6-0
     
  • Graduate student Victor Cruz went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, a pair of runs batted in, a run scored and a stolen base
     
  • Transfers Mike Kelly (2-for-4) and Matt Ervolina (2-for-3, two stolen bases) each added two hits and a RBI
     
  • Redshirt junior Ben Piripavel scored a pair of runs after drawing three walks
     
  • Tom Reisinger (1-0) dominated the Crimson Hawks in game one as the junior fired 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out six batters
     
  • Out of the bullpen, Ryan Dewees and Quinn Warmkessel both notched a pair of punchouts in the final two innings of work
     
  • Offensively in game two, the Warriors were limited to one run on five hits. Freshman Connor Reilly recorded his first collegiate RBI after fellow classmate Tanner Vicendese notched his first career hit
     
  • Nick McAuliffe (0-1) suffered the loss in finale after surrendering five runs on six hits while striking out three
     
  • In today's NCBWA Atlantic Region Poll, the Warriors dropped to No. 3 after opening the season ranked second
How it Happened – Game One (ESU 10, IUP 0)
The Warriors got on the scoreboard early as Pirpavel led off the game with a walk before Piatkiewicz followed with a home run to center field to give ESU a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

ESU broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning as Hubbard blasted a one-out grand slam to left field to stretch the Warriors' advantage to 6-0. Cruz got ESU started with a lead off double to right center field, followed by Ervolina reaching on an error by the Crimson Hawks. Piripavel would then draw a free pass to set the table for Hubbard.

ESU added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning as Kelly singled up the middle and stole second before Cruz punched a base hit into left field to make the score 7-0.

The Warriors took advantage of another IUP miscue and used three straight two-out RBI singles to stretch their advantage to 10-0 in the top half of the seventh inning. Jack Rothenhausler reached on a throwing error and Jake Gensemer walked before Kelly delivered single through the middle to make the score 8-0. Cruz tallied his second RBI of the opener with a base hit and Ervolina capped off the scoring for ESU with a single to put the Warriors ahead 10-0.

How it Happened – Game Two (IUP 9, ESU 1)
With one out in the bottom of the first inning, the Crimson Hawks recorded four consecutive hits to build a 4-0 lead. Andrew Sicinski got the scoring started with a two-RBI single, before crossing home plate on a double from Teague Hoover. Elijah Dunn capped off the frame for IUP with an RBI triple to right field.

IUP added to their edge in the bottom of the third inning as Dunn belted a solo home run to center field to make the score 5-0 in favor of the Crimson Hawks.
After the Crimson Hawks loaded the bases with two outs, Torrey Roper delivered a grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning to stretch IUP's lead to 9-0.

With two outs in top of the sixth inning, the Warriors finally broke through as Reilly doubled to center field to drive in Vicendese for ESU's first run of the game.

The Warriors are back on the road next Saturday with a trip to Chester, Virginia for doubleheader against Frostburg State on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
