#24 Baseball Finishes Off Series Sweep of Lock Haven; Wins Eighth Straight Game

EAST STROUDSBURG – The 24th-ranked East Stroudsburg University baseball team finished off the four-game sweep of Lock Haven as the Warriors won both games of the doubleheader on a cold and windy Sunday afternoon at Creekview Park.
The Warriors shut out Lock Haven for the second time in as many days with a 5-0 triumph in today's first game before closing out the series with an 11-2 victory in the finale.

Extending their win streak to eight games, ESU improved to 11-3 overall, 4-0 in the PSAC East and a perfect 5-0 at home, while the Bald Eagles slipped to 3-11 on the season and 0-4 in the conference.

In the four game series, ESU hitters pushed across 40 runs on 37 hits and worked 28 walks while Warrior pitching limited the Bald Eagles to a .153 batting average (15-for-98), four runs and 15 hits across 28 innings.
 
 

Notables
Game One
  • Shanley Wall continued to swing a hot bat as the sophomore went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored
  • Jack Rothenhausler continued to heat up as the junior finished a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, walk, one RBI and a run scored
  • Redshirt freshman Walker Zampella was 2-for-2 with a walk while redshirt senior Tim Haverstick went 1-for-3 with a RBI
  • Ryan Dewees (2-0) was spectacular on the mound as the sophomore twirled his first complete game shutout (7.0 innings) behind a career-high eight strikeouts while limiting the Bald Eagles to three hits. The Lincoln University, Pa. native has not allowed a run across his last 12 innings pitched and lowered his ERA to 3.06.
  • The Warriors went 5-for-6 on stolen bases as Wall, Rothenhausler, Jalen Soberal, Parker Frey and Zampella each swiped a bag
Game Two
  • Redshirt junior Cameron Hubbard (3-for-3) and Zampella (2-for-2) combined to finish 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored
  • Wall went 1-for-1 with two walks, two runs and an RBI while Frey and Haverstick both had a hit, two RBI and a run scored. Frey crushed his first home run of the season and second of his career in the bottom of the first inning.
  • Connor Reilly, Colin Houck (two walks) and Tanner Vicendese each drove in a run  
  • Gavin Sopko (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory as the freshman fired 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out a pair. Freshman Carson Renner, sophomore Jaden Newton (one strikeout) and junior Caden Parker (two strikeouts) each pitched an inning out of the bullpen
  • On the base paths, Mike Kelly, Hubbard, Ben Piripavel and Zampella all stole a base
  • Following the first four-game sweep of the Bald Eagles since 1985, ESU improved to 64-36 in the all-time series and have now defeated Lock Haven in 12 of the last 13 meetings dating back to 2019
How it Happened – ESU 5, Lock Haven 0 (Game One)
ESU grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Rothenhausler delivered a two-out RBI single through the left side to score Wall, who moved into scoring position following an infield single and stolen base.

The Warriors pushed across two additional runs in the home half of the second inning as Wall roped a two-out two-run double down the right field line to extend ESU's lead to 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, ESU added an insurance run on an RBI single from Haverstick, who brought home Rothenhausler following a leadoff double.

In ESU's last at-bats, the Warriors made the final score 5-0 when Hubbard recorded an RBI groundout to plate Wall.

How it Happened – ESU 11, Lock Haven 2 (Game Two)
ESU wasted no time taking a 4-0 lead in the series finale as the Warriors scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. Haverstick brought home a pair on a double and Frey followed with a two-run home run over the right field fence.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Warriors tacked on three more runs as Wall delivered a bases loaded sacrifice fly, before Hubbard cleared the bases with a two-run single.

With one out and runners on the corners in the home half of the fifth inning, Zampella singled up the middle to bring home Piripavel, making the score 8-0 in favor of ESU.

Despite not recording a hit in the bottom of the sixth inning, ESU added three more runs as Reilly and Houck worked bases loaded walks before Vicendese recorded an RBI ground out to bring the Warriors lead to 11-0.

Lock Haven pushed across two runs in their final at-bats in the top of the seventh inning as Francisco Taveras poked a two-run triple to center field to make the final score 11-2.

ESU returns to the diamond on Friday as the Warriors open a four-game PSAC East series against Shepherd at Creekview Park. The first pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 1 p.m.
