Extra-Inning Heroics Lead Warriors to Game 1 Victory

SHEPHERDSTOWN, Wv. – No. 9 ESU softball (33-6-1, 17-2-1) completes their two-game series against Shepherd (16-15-1, 12-7-1) by winning the first in extra innings and tying the second.
 
Batting Notables
  • Tatum Kresley went 5 for 8 on the day with a stolen base in each game.
  • Tulana Mingin had a season high four hits in game one with a double and a stolen base. She finished the day  5 for 7 with two walks.
  • Delaney Ridgell had a team leading 3 RBIs in game one.
  • Katie Master and Abigail Weirich each had one home run on the day. Weirich also collected 3 RBIs in game two.
Pitching Notables
  • Sarah Davenport threw 8.1 innings for the Warriors, credited with the win. Improving her overall season record to 22-0.
  • Abbie Landrum entered in relief for 0.2 innings of work and is credited with the save in game one.
 
How it Happened -ESU 9, Shepherd 8
ESU put up three unanswered runs in the first inning. Mingin had an RBI single, and Ridgell followed with a single up the middle, driving in Weirich and Mingin.
 
Shepherd put their first run up on the board in the bottom of the second with a solo HR from Brenna Collis.
 
The Warriors added one more in the top half of the 3rd inning, capitalizing on an error that allowed Ridgell to reach base and Weirich to score. Shepherd tied the game in the bottom half of the 3rd inning off a 3-run homer from Lauren Moore, bringing the score to 4-4.
 
ESU and Shepherd each put up one more run in the 4th inning to move the game to 5-5.
 
Ridgell had her third RBI of the game in the 6th inning when she drove in Mingin, giving the Warriors a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th. Shepherd forced extra innings by tying the game in their half of the 7th inning off a solo home run from Moore.
 
The 8th inning was another back-and-forth scoring campaign with the Warriors putting up two runs and the Rams answering with two of their own.
 
In the top of the 9th, Master homered to left field, giving the Warriors a 9-8 lead, which would prove to be enough to secure the game one win.
 
 
How it Happened - ESU 8, Shepherd 8
Despite posting two runs in the top half of the first inning, the Warriors fell to an early 2-7 deficit after a strong scoring campaign from the Rams in the bottom of the first.
 
ESU was able to chip away at the lead across the next four innings while holding the Rams scoreless. The Warriors scored one run in the second off a sacrifice fly by Lipkins. Master had an RBI single in the 3rd inning, moving the score to 4-7.

The Warriors earned their first lead of the game in the top of the 5th inning off a 3-run home run from Weirich and an RBI sacrifice fly from Maddie Pritchard, moving the score to 8-7. The Rams answered right away in the bottom of the inning, bringing the score back to an even 8-8 off an RBI single to right from Chambers.
 
After a scoreless 6th inning from both teams, the game was called and declared a tie because it became too dark outside to continue safely.

No. 9 ESU softball continues its road stint with a doubleheader at PSAC East opponent, Shippensburg University, on April 13th. Games are set for 1 and 3 p.m.
