EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. — The ESU baseball team took the first game of Friday's doubleheader against Saint Anselm 2-0, picking up the win off seven shutout innings from
Ryan Dewees and a walk-off home run by
Ryan Manning.
PITCHING NOTABLES
- Dewees had one of his best outings as a Warrior, dealing through 7.0 IP. The starting pitcher recorded eight strikeouts, only allowing four hits, but went the whole way without allowing a base on balls.
- Cole Dymek ended up picking up the win in the first game after a scoreless eighth inning. Dymek struck out two and forced a flyout for his third out.
BATTING NOTABLES
- Manning was the hero for the Warriors, going 1-2 with two walks in the first game. With a runner in scoring position and one out, Manning sent one over the centerfield wall to give ESU the 2-0 win in the bottom of the eighth.
- Walker Zampella had a two-hit game in the opener, while Braydon Hubbard and Christian Maccarrone each had two hits as well in the second game. Zampella also came away with a stolen base, as the other two both scored once.
GAME ONE
- The first game of the day was a pitchers' duel, as neither offense was able to break through against each team's starter. Zander Condeelis had the first hit of the day for ESU in the bottom of the third off a single to right field, but was left stranded on base.
- While ESU's offense started to create longer at-bats and get on base, Dewees held it down on the mound for the Warriors. Through five innings, he struck out eight batters and stranded three runners to keep Saint Anselm off the board.
- ESU had three chances with runners in scoring position to tally the go-ahead run in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings, but couldn't get the runner across the plate. Zampella singled to center and advanced to second in the fifth, Cole Serfass singled and stole second in the sixth, and Zampella walked and stole second as well, but the Hawks escaped each inning.
- In the bottom of the eighth, Braydon Hubbard got on base with base on balls, and then stole second base to move into scoring position. Manning, who came into the game as an injury replacement, delivered with two-run home run to give ESU the win in its first home game of the season.
GAME TWO
- After both teams' offenses sputtered in the first game, the bats came alive in game two. Saint Anselm struck first, getting three hits in the top of the first, but ESU responded with a two-run bottom half of the inning. Hubbard led off with a double, and Manning immediately scored him off a single through the left side, advancing to second at the end of the play. After a lineout moved Manning to third, Parker Frey hit a sacrifice fly to give ESU the lead.
- The Hawks took the lead back though in the bottom of the third, using a two-run inning of their own. After two singles and two outs, the Hawks hit a single into no-man's-land in left field, scoring one and then the other off a throwing error.
- The Warriors were able to tie it again in the bottom of the fourth, starting with a double by Maccarrone. Zampella drew a walk and Easton Albert was hit in the next at bat to load the bases. Jackson Rutecki hit a ball deep enough to center field, scoring Maccarrone and advancing the other two runners. However, the Warriors couldn't bring home anymore, going into the fifth inning tied 3-3.
- Saint Anselm had another response to ESU's offense, scoring the game-winning runs in the top of the inning. The Hawks tallied three runs, forcing ESU to go to its bullpen for the rest of the game. They added another two in the top of the seventh, and although Serfass got one run back with a RBI single in the bottom of the inning, it would not be enough to make the comeback as ESU fell 8-4.
