ALLENTOWN, Pa. — In a doubleheader at Coca-Cola Park, ESU outscored Kutztown 16-1 in two dominant wins to open the final series of the 2026 regular season.
BATTING NOTABLES
- Parker Frey and Cole Serfass led the way for ESU at the plate, as Frey went 4-6 with a triple, and Serfass was 3-5 with a double. Frey drove in a team-high four RBI on the day, and Serfass had a pair of runs driven in.
- Gabe Gillespie stepped up as the team's DH in both games, having his best game of the season in game one. He hit his first career triple in a 2-4 performance, driving in three RBI and scoring once.
PITCHING NOTABLES
- Ryan Dewees was dealing in game one, going 5.0 IP in the shutout. Improving to 7-2, he struck out nine batters and only walked three.
- Ethan Woods had a similarly dominant outing in the second game, throwing his second career complete game. Woods had a scoreless outing up until the seventh inning, striking out five, giving up five hits without any walks.
GAME ONE
- The Warriors took the lead in the top of the first and never looked back, jumping out with a 5-0 advantage. With one out and bases loaded, Frey singled through the right side to score Walker Zampella and Troy Davis, with Serfass advancing to second. Easton Albert followed that up with another single into right field, moving Frey up a base and scoring Serfass. After Christian Maccarrone drew a walk to load the bases again, Gillespie hit ESU's third RBI single through the right side of the inning to drive home Frey and Easton Albert.
- After Kutztown's first two batters reached base, Dewees followed that up by striking out the next three to get out of the inning. The senior sat down two more batters by strikeout in the next inning and stranded another two runners to keep it 5-0.
- Frey led off the top of the third with a walk, moving up to second after Albert was also walked. A fielder's choice moved Frey 90 feet away, and Maccarrone sent a fly ball into left field that allowed Frey to tag up and score.
- Serfass drove in Davis in the top of the fourth to make it 7-0, and a three-run fifth inning put ESU past the double-digit mark. Reilly doubled to score Albert from second, and Gillespie's triple made it 9-0. Later on, Gillespie made it home after a wild pitch got past the catcher.
- Dewees only faced six total batters in his final two innings, striking out the side in the fourth, and using a double play and his ninth strikeout to complete his scoreless start. Kyle Phillips got the final two innings for ESU, striking out two while only giving up two hits.
- Frey drove in a run and scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth, and scoring the last run for ESU was Ryan Manning on an Aidan Butz sacrifice fly.
GAME TWO
- The Warriors got the scoring started in the top of the second, as Frey started the inning with a walk. On the same play Albert singled to the shortstop, a throwing error to try and get Frey out at second base went into left field, allowing both runners to move into scoring position. Reilly sent a fly ball into center field, with Frey tagging from third to make it 1-0.
- ESU tripled its lead in the bottom of the third, as Serfass and Frey added all the insurance the Warriors would need in the second game. Davis reached base on a one-out single, then stole second base. Serfass singled into center field, with Davis scoring on the play. Frey came up to bat next, tripling into the right-center field gap, making it 3-0.
- Woods was clinical against the Golden Bears through the first six innings, as he only gave up five hits and didn't walk a batter all day. Kutztown got some offense going late, trying to start a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth with a single. Davis made a highlight-reel diving catch to end the inning, but the Golden Bears spoiled the shutout with one run in the seventh. That was all Kutztown would get though, as Woods completed the game on the mound in the 3-1 win.
