LEWISBURG – Senior Lynn Mayer tied the school record and hit the NCAA Division II automatic qualifying mark in the women's high jump and senior Negus Graham and junior Ian Melhorn both ran provisional qualifying times in men's sprint events as East Stroudsburg University competed at the Bucknell Heptagonal on Saturday at Gerhard Field House.

Mayer cleared 5-9 1/4, currently the third-best jump in Division II this year, to tie the mark set by her coach, Karen (Way) Gaita, in finishing second at the 1991 NCAA Championships. Mayer and Gaita are the only four-time All-Americans in ESU track and field history, and Mayer can join Gaita as the only women to win national championships later this season. Gaita won the 1991 NCAA outdoor title, while Mayer tied for second indoors and tied for third outdoors last season.

Graham, an All-American both indoors and outdoors in the 400m last year, won the event with a time of 48.96 a week after setting the school record in the 500m at Kutztown. He also anchored the 4x400m relay team to a time of 3:23.25, the fastest in the PSAC this season, joined by senior Greg Pammer, Melhorn and freshman Keith Parker-Washington.

Melhorn set the school record in one event and reached an NCAA provisional mark in another. He won the 200m dash in 22.20 seconds, right on the qualifying standard, and was fourth in the 60m dash in 7.03 seconds – one-hundredth faster than senior Asher Ashfield's time and two-hundredths faster than his own time in the season opener at Lehigh.

Sophomore Corey Young also had a provisional time in the 60m hurdles, finishing second in 8.24 seconds. Young was seventh in the prelims in 8.65, while sophomore Kyle Soden was third in the prelims in 8.57 and fifth in the finals in 8.52.

Junior Dan Johnson won the men's high jump with a mark of 6-6 3/4 to give the Warriors four individual winners. Three of the winners were on the men's side – Graham, Melhorn and Johnson – to help ESU finish fourth of the seven schools. The women were eighth in a field of six Division I and two Division II schools.

ESU's other top women's finishes included the seventh-fastest time in school history in the 3000m from sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald, who ran 10:19.36 to finish behind NCAA Division II cross country champion Neely Spence of Shippensburg and Alysha Hooper of Bucknell. Senior Jasmine Johnson was fifth in the 400m (58.54), sophomore Lauren Ventrella made the finals of the 60m hurdles and finished seventh, and senior Danielle Laws had a mark of 47-7 1/4 in the weight throw, fourth-best in ESU history.

The men's 4x800m relay joined the 4x400m team in running the top time in the PSAC this season. The group of sophomore Mike Saparito, freshman Steve Werley, senior Mahmoud Aldeen and sophomore Amr Aldeen finished third in 7:56.60. Saparito was fourth in the 800m in 1:57.22 and Amr Aldeen was fourth in the 1000m in 2:33.62.
