EAST STROUDSBURG – Sophomore Rose Mascoli ran an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying time in the 5000, classmate Corinne Fitzgerald bettered her provisional time in the steeplechase and both set school records for East Stroudsburg University at this weekend's Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell.
Mascoli ran a time of 16:36.98, the 10th-fastest in Division II this season, to take more than 40 seconds off the school record and automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will be held in late May at Cal State-Stanislaus in Turlock, California. She placed fifth in a field of 75 runners and was the top Division II runner. Katrina Spratford of Shippensburg and Cristina Reimer of Kutztown also broke 17 minutes.
An All-American during the cross country season, Mascoli broke the 29-year old school record of 17:20.04 set by Sue Carden in 1982 for her third record-setting performance in five weeks. She also set new standards in the 3K two weeks ago at Lafayette and the 10K at the season-opening Lynchburg Invitational on March 19. She currently ranks eighth in the nation in the 10K at 35:44.20.
Not to be outdone, Fitzgerald knocked more than 20 seconds off her school record and NCAA provisional time in the 3000m steeplechase to move to sixth on the Division II list. Her time of 10:43.90 replaces a time of 11:06.03 at Lafayette and marks the third time she has set the school record, which previously stood at 11:20.02 before she broke it at last year's PSAC Championships.
Junior Josh Hontz and sophomore Russell Hedrick both hit the NCAA provisional standard in the javelin to highlight the rest of the Warriors' performers. Hontz finished second at 209-10, just off his qualifying mark of 210-5 last weekend at Millersville, and Hedrick placed fourth with a top throw of 193-8, one inch better than the provisional standard.
The performances by Mascoli, Fitzgerald, Hontz and Hedrick all came on Friday, before the rest of the field was forced to battle through rainy and windy conditions on Saturday. Most of the Warriors who made the trip were able to compete in their events, including junior Devyn Emerich (3rd in women's high jump), sophomore Cory Young (2nd in men's 110m hurdles) and sophomore Mike Saparito (8th in men's 1500m)
The Warriors also sent athletes to Bloomsburg to compete in the Husky Open and had two first-place finishers – senior Danielle Laws in the hammer and senior Justin Kimbrough in the 10,000m.
Laws (152-6), freshman Elizabeth Madden (4th, 138-6) and senior Caitlin Keen (5th, 134-1) all tied or reached season bests in the hammer, junior Sarah Wysocki was second with a season best in the 5000m (19:45.75) and sophomore Emily Haws was fifth with a season best in the 10,000m (39:35.00).
Kimbrough ran a time of 33:41.00 to win the men's 10,000m and the Warriors had the second- and third-place finishers in the long jump in freshmen Tim Burgio and Nate Horn.
ESU hosts the fifth annual All-America Meet next Saturday at Eiler-Martin Stadium.
