MILLERSVILLE – Junior Josh Hontz had a personal best and NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the javelin, senior All-American Negus Graham hit the provisional time in the 400 and sophomore Rose Mascoli ran another standout time in the 1500 to lead East Stroudsburg University at the Millersville Metrics on Saturday.
Hontz's throw of 210-5 was a personal best by more than eight feet, ranks eighth on the NCAA qualifying list and is just under three feet from the automatic qualifying mark for the Division II Championships. Hontz was 13th in the nation in his first appearance at the NCAA Championships last season.
Graham ran the 400, his signature event, for the first time during the outdoor season and landed right on the NCAA provisional time of 48.00 seconds. He is coming off a fifth-place finish for his third career All-America honor at the NCAA Indoor Championships and also helped the 4x400m relay team (Christopher Walker, Keith-Parker Washington, Graham and Greg Pammer) to a time of 3:16.70 which was almost four seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Mascoli ran a time of 4:39.35 to win the 1500 by 18-hundredths of a second over Millersville's Elicia Anderson. The time bettered Mascoli's performance at last week's Lafayette Invitational by just under two seconds, the same meet in which she set the school record in the 3,000. Her performances in the 1500 the last two weekends rank second-best in school history.
Three other Warriors also turned in winning performances, including junior Ian Melhorn in the 200, where his time of 21.66 was a .25-second PR and is tied with former PSAC indoor champion Chris Reddick for fourth all-time at ESU. Melhorn was also third in the 100 in 10.97, just behind senior Asher Ashfield's 10.96.
Senior Lynn Mayer, the Warriors' five-time All-American high jumper, cleared 5-6 1/2 to win for the 21st time in her last 24 meets. Mayer was coming off a NCAA provisional mark of 5-8 1/2, the second-best in Division II this season, at Lafayette last week.
Freshman Chris Schneider rounded out the Warriors' winners with a time of 15:38.90 to take the 5000m run. Other highlights from ESU's men's distance runners included senior Chris Zadroga (8:50.37) and freshman James Romano (8:51.27), who ran the sixth and seventh-fastest times in school history in the 3000 and are among five Warriors who have entered the top 10 list at that distance this season.
The Warriors' men's team also received runner-up finishes from sophomore Cory Young in the 110m hurdles (15.12), junior Dan Johnson in the high jump (6-2 3/4), junior Brandon Hillman in the triple jump (45-1 3/4) and freshman James Homola in the pole vault (14-7 1/4), along with Ashfield's time in the 100.
The distance runners also carried the day for the women's team, led by Mascoli's winning effort in the 1500 and ninth-place finish in the 800 (2:23.79). Sophomore Bridget McCarron also had strong performances in both events, placing sixth in the 1500 in 4:48.67 and 10th in the 800 in 2:23.90.
Sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald posted an outstanding time to finish third in the 3000, knocking 47 seconds off her personal best from last year to run the sixth-fastest time in school history in 10:06.58. Fitzgerald broke her own 3000m steeplechase record last week in 11:06.03.
This week's steeplechase standout was freshman Kim Lowry, who finished in 11:43.83 – fourth-fastest all-time at ESU – in her first time running the event for the Warriors. Lowry placed second after running season-best times of 4:58 in the 1500 and 10:39 in the 3000 earlier this year.
In the sprints, senior Jasmine Johnson ran the 200 for the first time this season and was second in 25.86 seconds. Last year's PSAC runner-up in the 200, Johnson is a 10-time PSAC placewinner and has scored on nine relays in her career at ESU.
Johnson also anchored the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to third-place finishes – sophomore Lauren Ventrella, freshmen Nicole Brown and Rachel Pierantozzi and Johnson ran a season-best of 49.15 in the 4x100, and freshmen Colleen Murphy, Brown, Christy Cardillo and Johnson ran the 4x400 in 4:02.38. Individually, Pierantozzi was fourth in the 100 in 12.82, also a season-best.
In the jumping events, freshman Lindsay Brenneman was second in the long jump (16-8 1/2), junior Devyn Emerich tied for second (5-2 1/2) and freshman Theresa Horn tied for fifth (5-0 1/2) behind Mayer in the high jump, junior Jenn Alpers was fifth in the triple jump (33-10 1/2) and freshman Laura Beimfohr was fifth in the pole vault (10-4).
Senior Danielle Laws paced the throwers with a runner-up finish in the discus (season-best 127-10) and third-place showing in the hammer (151-7). Sophomore Paige Fleagle had a PR of 121-2 to finish fourth and sophomore Laura Wall was fifth (118-1) in the javelin, and senior Jackie Berthelsen was sixth in the shot put (36-6 1/4) and seventh in the discus (113-0).
The Warriors will be at two different sites next weekend as they send athletes to the Bison Outdoor Classic at Bucknell and the Husky Open at Bloomsburg. Four weekends remain to post qualifying marks for the PSAC Championships, which will be held May 12-14 at Slippery Rock.
