SLIPPERY ROCK – Senior Negus Graham won the 200, 400 and anchored the winning 4x400 relay to earn the men's meet MVP and led East Stroudsburg University's men's track and field team to its third straight runner-up finish at the PSAC Outdoor Championships on Saturday at Slippery Rock.
Graham ran the second-fastest time in Division II in the prelims of the 400 (46.63) on Friday and cruised to the title in 47.16, won the 200 in 21.99, ran the third leg on the second-place 4x100 relay and anchored the Warriors to a school record of 3:13.91 in the 4x400 to finish the meet. He repeated his 200/400 and 4x400 relay titles from the PSAC Indoor Championships, when he was also named the MVP, and gives ESU the men's MVP at the last five PSAC Championships – Andrew McCloskey (2009 outdoors), Chris Reddick (2010 indoors), Paul Wagner (2010 outdoors) and Graham at both meets during the 2011 season.
Senior Asher Ashfield won the 100m dash in 10.88 seconds (VIDEO), his first career PSAC title, to help ESU become the first school with the men's 100, 200 and 400 champions since Slippery Rock in 2000. Graham, a five-time individual and four-time relay champion in two seasons with the Warriors, is the first men's sprinter to hold the 200/400 titles both indoors and outdoors since Bradley Rager of California in 2005.
ESU scored 111 points, eight ahead of third-place Lock Haven, after entering the 4x400 relay just two points clear of the Bald Eagles, who had three of the top four individuals in the 400. The Warriors came through with an outstanding performance without junior Ian Melhorn, who sustained an injury while running the top time in the 200 on Friday but still came back to anchor the 4x100 relay to second place and finish sixth in the 100 and 200.
Freshmen Keith Parker-Washington and Christopher Walker both ran splits of 48.9 seconds to get the baton to senior Greg Pammer, who turned in a lap of 48.4, and Graham, who anchored in 47.6 in his fourth race of the day. The Warriors finished 1.10 seconds ahead of second-place Slippery Rock while Lock Haven came home fifth, almost five seconds behind the winners.
ESU's women's team finished fourth with 73.5 points, its second straight fourth-place finish and fifth straight appearance in the top five. Shippensburg won its second straight title with 170 points, Slippery Rock was second with 163.5 and Kutztown was third with 95.5. Shippensburg's men won their third straight title with 174 points.
Senior Jasmine Johnson had the top day for the Warriors' women, finishing second in the 200 (25.39) and 400 (56.60) and running a 56.6-second split on the third leg of the 4x400 relay, which placed seventh. Johnson finishes her career as a six-time runner-up at the PSAC championships and scored in 12 individual sprints and 10 relays in her career. (VIDEO: 200 / 400)
Sophomore Rose Mascoli also recorded a runner-up finish in the 3000 with a time of 10:04.57, four seconds behind women's MVP Neely Spence, who won the 1500, 3000 and 5000 during the weekend. Mascoli was fifth in the 1500 with a career-best of 4:37.78 and was third in the 5000 on Friday. (VIDEO: 1500 / 3000 / 5000)
The Warriors also received second-place points from senior Danielle Laws in the discus with a throw of 130-2. Laws scored in the discus during all four seasons at ESU, was fifth in the hammer on Thursday and scored in a total of seven events during her career.
Freshman Laura Beimfohr tied for fourth in the pole vault at 11-2 1/2, scoring for the second straight meet. Sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald finished seventh in the 3000m steeplechase (11:25.18) and sophomore Lauren Ventrella was eighth in the 100m hurdles (15.81). Ventrella also ran on the 4x100 and 4x400 relays that finished seventh.
Graham, Ashfield, Melhorn and the rest of the men's sprinters combined to score 61 of the Warriors' 111 points during the weekend.
Graham led four Warriors who scored a total of 20 points in the 200. Freshman Keith Parker-Washington was third (22.23), Melhorn was sixth (22.62) and Ashfield was eighth (23.69). Ashfield won the 100 and Melhorn was sixth for 13 points, Graham picked up 10 first-place points in the 400 and the winning 4x400 and second-place 4x100 accounted for a total of 18 points.
The Warriors came within 15-hundredths of a second of winning their third straight 4x100 relay, running a time of 41.04 to fall just short of Shippensburg's 40.90. Both teams ran times of 41.00 seconds in separate heats on Friday. Ashfield ran the first leg, followed by Parker-Washington, Graham and Melhorn.
Four other athletes scored points on the track for the men. Sophomore Mike Saparito was fifth in the 800 in 1:53.08, just off his school record time of 1:52.96 that was good for eighth in the prelims, and senior Chris Zadroga was fifth in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:29.39. In the 110m hurdles, sophomore Cory Young was fifth in 15.17 and sophomore Kyle Soden was seventh in 15.70.
Soden also came away with a third-place effort in the high jump, clearing 6-5 1/2 to score in the event for the fourth straight meet. Freshman James Homola was third in the pole vault at 14-11 1/2, moving up one spot from fourth during the indoor season.
On Friday, senior Lynn Mayer (women's high jump) and junior Josh Hontz (men's javelin) gave the Warriors two individual champions. Mayer won her fourth straight PSAC title and Hontz hit the NCAA automatic standard with a throw of 222-8, the third-best in Division II this season.
The field for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday. The Warriors have three automatic qualifiers in Mascoli in the 5000 and 10,000, Graham in the 400 and Hontz in the javelin.
Provisional qualifiers are Jasmine Johnson in the 400, Fitzgerald in the steeplechase, Mayer in the high jump, Young in the 110m hurdles, Brandon Hillman in the triple jump, Russell Hedrick in the javelin, Dan Johnson in the decathlon and the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
