MILLERSVILLE – Graduate student Eric Garner notched an NCAA provisional mark in the javelin and the East Stroudsburg University men's track and field team tallied a first-place finish at the 39th annual Millersville Metrics on Saturday at Biemesderfer Stadium.
Also Earning conference qualifying marks were Camden Shaffer (10000m), Luke Valdevit (5000m), Austin Nice (100m) Tyler Boone (220m), Raul Esteves (200m), Jack Gorham (long jump), Grant Fox (pole vault) and Eric Garner (javelin).
Making his ESU debut, Garner was impressive as he recorded a first place finish in the javelin and an NCAA provisional mark after recording a throw of 65.42m (214-7). Garner's mark is the fourh-best in program history and ranks fourth in all of Division II.
Running Highlights
Shaffer kicked off the day for the Warriors on the track with an impressive showing in the 10000m as he took sixth with a conference qualifying time of 33:57.53.
Valdevit followed that up with a third place finish in the 5000m as he just clocked a time under the PSAC qualifying mark at 15:39.30. The senior returned to the track with a 10th place finish in the 1500m with a time of 4:10.78 while Brian McGarrity was 13th with a personal-best time of 4:11.49.
The Warriors finished as the runner-up in the 4x100m relay as Sean Roberts, Tyler Boone, Raul Esteves and Austin Nice clocked a time of 42.75.
Roberts would take second place in the 400m after crossing the line in 50.53, which is just .03 seconds shy of a PSAC mark. Zephyr Crestwell earned a top-10 finish in ninth with a time of 51.55.
With three Warriors in the 110m hurdles finals, Daniel Daley led the way in second with a personal-best time of 15:45, followed by Nasir Kyle (16.08) in fifth and Liam Beifus (17.16) in seventh.
In the 100m dash finals, Esteves secured a fourth place finish in 11.20 and Nice took seventh after clocking a time of 11.32. Nice notched a PSAC qualifying time in the prelims at 11.14.
ESU notched three top-10 finished in the 400m hurdles with Kyle (58.37) in third, followed by Beifus (1:01.16) in eighth and Zandrew Bowe (1:04.09) in 10th.
On their way to PSAC qualifying times in the 200m, Boon finished third at 22.18 and Esteves followed in fourth with a time of 22.39.
ESU closed out the day on the track by earning a first place finish in the 4x400m relay as the group of Roberts, Crestwell, Ryan Ditty and Boone ran a time 3:20.74.
Field Event Highlights
On his way to a PSAC qualifying mark in the long jump, Jack Gorham took first place with leap of 6.73m (22-1).
While clearing a conference qualifying height of 4.20m (13-9 ¼) in the pole vault, Fox finished as the runner up, followed by Robert Plumb in fourth, who cleared 3.90m (12-9 ½).
Romanley Turnier cleared the bar at 1.85m (6-0 ¾) on his way to fourth place finish in the high jump while Caleb Carney tied for seventh at 1.80m (5-10 ¾).
In the hammer throw, Isaac Almoney led the way in third with a mark of 52.32m (171-8) and Daryn Blackwell took sixth at 46.34m (152-0).
Cole Gorham was the runner-up in the shot put after recording a mark of 15.50m (50-10 ¼), followed by Almoney in fourth at 15.21m (49-11) and Will Mattei in ninth with a throw of 13.74m (45-1).
Gorham returned to the throws area by taking first place in the discus with a throw of 50.04m (164-02), which shattered the freshman record and ranked second all-time in program history. Almoney closed out his day with a fifth place finish after launching the disc 43.88m (143-11) and Blackwell was seventh at 41.14m (135-0).
The Warriors claimed the top two spots in the javelin, led by Garner in first and Zach Nissley as the runner-up with a throw of 57.60m (189-0).
