CARY, N.C. – The No. 22 East Stroudsburg University baseball team swept Concord by scores of 9-1 and 11-4 at the USA Baseball Complex.
The Warriors (2-0) outscored the Mountain Lions (2-3) 20-5 over two games, recording eight extra-base hits, including two home runs.
Pitching Notables
Ryan Dewees (1-0) and
Gavin Sopko (1-0) earned the wins for ESU. Both pitchers went three innings, allowed no walks or runs, before giving the ball over to the bullpen.
As a unit, the Warriors pitching staff only allowed three earned runs over 16 innings and struck out 12 Mountain Lions.
Batting Notables
Francisco Taveras drove in four RBIs, including a three-run home run in Game 1, and led all Warriors with five hits while stealing a base.
Walker Zampella went 3-for-5 with a stolen base, a double, and an RBI single in Game 1.
Dennis Pierce followed up Taveras with a two-run home run in Game 2.
Jack Rothenhausler scored four runs and hit a two-RBI double in the third inning of Game 1.
Parker Frey tallied three hits, including a two-RBI triple in the first inning of Game 2.
How It Happened – Game 1
The Warriors scored early and often in the first game. In the first inning, Rothenhausler and Zampella each drove in a run with singles.
In the third, both players drove in additional runs, extending the lead to 5-0. After an error in the fourth, the lead grew to 6-0.
Taveras then hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to make it 9-0, and ESU went on to win 9-1.
The pitching trio of Dewees,
Johansel Brito, and
Jake Albert allowed just one run and struck out five in seven innings.
How It Happened – Game 2
ESU's offensive surge continued in Game 2. Frey drove in two runs with a two-out triple.
The Warriors' biggest inning came in the third, as they scored five runs on a two-run home run by Pierce, an RBI single from
Jackson Rutecki, an RBI triple from Taveras, and an error, pushing the lead to 7-0. Concord scored four runs, but ESU added more to its lead, eventually winning 11-4.
The Warriors' bullpen of Sopko,
Peyton Brannock, and
Cole Dymek allowed no runs in their combined six innings.

ESU will play its next game at home against D'Youville in a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 22, and a standalone game on Sunday, Feb. 23. The doubleheader will begin at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., with the Sunday game scheduled for 11 a.m.
