LOCK HAVEN, Pa. — After getting back to the PSAC Tournament for the first time since 2022, the ESU men's soccer team had seven players make All-PSAC East Teams, including
Steven Arias, who was named the division's Athlete of the Year.
Making the First Team alongside Arias was midfielder
Drew Nyce. Representing ESU on the Second Team were
Christian Gesse,
Jose Rosario,
Owen Rennie,
Jeter Cardona, and
Phil Sykes. With seven All-PSAC players, it's the most the Warriors have had since 2023. It's also the ninth consecutive year with multiple players making the all-conference teams. Arias' Athlete of the Year marks the fourth major award for men's soccer since
Tom Mustac took over as head coach in 2023, with a total of 25 players being recognized with All-PSAC appearances in that time.
Arias had a standout campaign in his first season with the Warriors, earning East Player of the Week three times and ending the regular season as the third-leading scorer in the conference. Putting 43.6% of his 39 shots on target made him the third-most accurate player in the East. The junior scored in seven different games for ESU, with six of them being wins. Arias finished the regular season with 17 points, ranking second offensively in the East. The Bronx, N.Y., native is the first Warrior to earn the Athlete of the Year award since Jorge Chapoy in 2003, marking the 10th time ESU has received the honor.
Nyce makes his first appearance on the First Team after being named to the Second Team in his previous two seasons. The junior became a regular in the starting lineup with the start of conference play. Defensively, Nyce made his presence known, as the most goals scored with him in the game were two, coming against the No. 3 and No. 9 scoring offenses in the conference, Lock Haven and West Chester. Nyce also proved to be a contributor to the Warriors' offense as well, assisting in the game-tying goal in the first contest against Bloomsburg and totaling six shots with one shot on goal.
ESU holds two of the defensive spots on the Second Team.
Christian Gesse is one of three Freshmen recognized across both All-PSAC teams after starting all but one game for the Warriors. With Gesse back to defend, ESU allowed multiple goals just four times, with one of those coming against Gannon, the No. 8 offense in the nation. Overall, Gesse contributed to seven clean sheets for the Warriors.
Jose Rosario is the other defender on the Second Team, playing in six shutout games. The junior has added to the offense as well, recording a shot in five different games, with the ones against Lackawanna and West Chester going on goal.
The ESU player representing the midfield is
Owen Rennie. Last year's Freshman of the Year started 13 games, recording the third-most assists for the Warriors with three and two goals on 38 shots. His 2.5 shots per game is the best in the East, while averaging 0.3 assists ranks him No. 5 in the division. On the defensive side of the ball, multiple goals were scored with Rennie on the field only twice this season, coming in the games against Gannon and Queens (N.Y.). The sophomore's impact was felt in five shutouts, three of which occurred in conference matchups.
Jeter Cardona is the lone forward on the All-PSAC Second Team from ESU, making the team for the first time in his career. The sophomore has been a key player for the Warriors' offense, leading the team in assists and second-best in goals. With five total assists, he's tied for fourth in the conference, averaging 0.3 per game. Cardona's scoring ability has been clutch for the Warriors, as three of his four goals scored have come as game-winners, making him the first ESU player to hit this mark since 2023.
Phil Sykes is the final player receiving All-PSAC honors, posting one of the best seasons in the net the Warriors have seen in a while for his first season as the primary starter. The junior became the first ESU goalkeeper to record over 1,000 minutes in goal since 2019, recording 1,233 minutes through 14 starts. In that time, he faced the most shots of any goalie in the last nine years, 164, and made the play to save 49 of them, another record since 2019, with just 14 goals allowed.
