Baseball Splits Weekend Series Against Pitt-Johnstown

ABERDEEN, Md. — The ESU baseball team split its weekend series against Pitt-Johnstown at The Cal Ripken Experience in Aberdeen, Md., picking up a 4-0 win to start the day but falling 11-2 in the fourth game.

PITCHING NOTABLES
  • Evan Hughes and Cade Davis combined to shut out the Mountain Cats in the first game, with Hughes earning the win and Davis coming in for the save. Hughes struck out eight batters in five full innings, only allowing four hits and two walks, while Davis retired six of the eight batters he faced ceding just one hit.
  • Jack Bacolo and Patrick Yoder came out of the bullpen in the second game, throwing scoreless outings. Bacolo pitched 2.0 innings, striking out one while working around two hits. Yoder made his first appearance of the year, also recording a strike out.

BATTING NOTABLES
  • Easton Albert and Shanley Wall both tallied two hits in the first game. Albert went 2-4, driving in a run, while Wall also walked twice to go 2-2, scoring two times for ESU.
  • Parker Frey and Cole Serfass recorded the other two RBIs for ESU in game one, as Frey went 1-2 with two walks and a run, and Serfass went 1-3.

GAME ONE
  • Through the top of the third, Hughes kept Pitt-Johnstown off the board with seven strikeouts. The offense got going to give him support, as Wall drew a walk, and Frey doubled him home. Serfass came up next, hitting a single through the right side to score Frey and make it 2-0.
  • Hughes continued to stymie the Mountain Cats' offense, stranding four runners in scoring position and ending his outing with a strikeout to end the fifth. Wall led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right field, stealing third during the next at bat. After Frey and Walker Zampella drew walks to load the bases, all three runners moved up off a passed ball to make it 3-0.
  • Following Davis' first inning of scoreless pitching, Braydon Hubbard came in as a pinch runner and stole second and third base. Albert was able to bring him home with a single, making it 4-0.

GAME TWO
  • After failing to score at all in the first half of the day's doubleheader, Pitt-Johnstown responded by scoring the first 11 runs in the second game. The Mountain Cats started the game with two-, four-, and another four-run inning, jumping out to an 11-0 lead.
  • The Warriors got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as Ryland Yinger led off with a base on balls. After Chase Frantz followed up with another walk, Zander Condeelis came in as a pinch hitter and hit a single to score Yinger. In the seventh, Connor Reilly had another leadoff walk for ESU. Aidan Butz pinch ran for him, moving to third base after a Troy Davis double. Butz scored the next at bat off a sacrifice fly from Josh Erd, making it 11-2.
