Warriors Shut Out Spartans as Davis Deals

POMONA, N.Y. – The East Stroudsburg baseball team extended its win streak to 11 after shutting out St. Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday evening.

BATTING NOTABLES

  • After a walk-off RBI single to finish a four-game sweep against Shippensburg, Easton Albert kept things going with multiple RBI's today. Albert went 2-4, which included the Warriors' only extra base hit of the day, while scoring a run and reaching from a base on balls as well.
  • Chase Frantz was the only other ESU batter with multiple hits, going 2-3 with an RBI sacrifice fly. He reached with a base on balls and scored three times.

  • East Stroudsburg got some help from Braydon Hubbard who was 1-1 with a base on balls, driving in a run and crossing the plate himself as well. Troy Davis, Walker Zampella, and Connor Reilly all pitched in, giving the Warriors an RBI of their own.

PITCHING NOTABLES

  • Cade Davis was phenomenal for the Warriors today, going 6.0 IP and not allowing a single run. He faced 21 batters, striking out 11 of them and only giving up two hits and two walks. Davis got the win for ESU, and now improves to 3-1 on the season.

  • Joe Zito came in for relief in the top of the seventh. He faced three batters, not allowing a hit and striking out one.

  • Evan Kovalcik was next in line, tossing 1.0 IP and not allowing any hits as well.

  • Finally, Kyle Phillips came in to close things out, going 1.0 IP and striking out two batters.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • East Stroudsburg took hold of the lead in the top of the first inning, and there was no looking back. Hubbard set the tone, getting on from a base on balls, and then proceeding to advance to third base on a steal and a wild pitch. Davis, stuck in a 3-2 count, grounded out to second base to get Hubbard home safe from third.

  • ESU took advantage of some costly mistakes in the second inning, as Frantz would reach on a throwing error, and then make his way to third after two wild pitches. After Christian Maccrone would walk, Albert ripped a single up the middle, letting Frantz score. Hubbard followed things up right away, singling to right center and driving in another run. After Davis was hit by a pitch, Zampella worked a seven-pitch walk that scored Albert.

  • The early lead would take some pressure off Davis, who was dealing through the first two innings. He had faced six batters, striking out four of them.

  • The Warriors would not stop scoring, as two more runs would be added on in the third and fourth innings. After a Frantz single and Maccarrone reaching by base on balls, Albert would step up to the plate and line a double to center field. This gave him his second RBI of the day. In the top of the fourth, after a pair of singles from Cole Serfass and Parker Frey, two straight walks for Frantz and Reilly would give ESU another run.

  • After throwing three straight strikeouts in the bottom of the third, Davis would finally give up his first hit to the Spartans. However, he'd keep St. Thomas Aquinas at bay, keeping them off the scoreboard through the fourth.

  • Davis would continue to dominate, wrapping up his day after six innings and 11 strikeouts. He would only allow two hits and two walks.

  • Things picked back up for the ESU offense in the seventh. Frantz hit his second single of the day on the first pitch he saw in the at bat. Reilly reached on a base on balls, and the two would advance thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Maccarrone. Reilly would go on to score from a wild pitch.

  • Aidan Butz would pinch run for Serfass after he reached on four straight balls. Butz, who reached third after a steal and a groundout, scored on an RBI sacrifice fly from Frantz.

  • The combination of Zito, Kovalcik, and Phillips came in to pitch for the Warriors, sealing the deal for the victory. The three in total gave up one hit and struck out three.
