Charlotte 49er Classic
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Rose Mascoli and the men's 4x100m relay team ran NCAA provisional qualifying times and Mascoli set the school record in the 10,000m run as East Stroudsburg University opened the outdoor track and field season at the Dr. Jack M. Toms Invitational at Lynchburg University on Saturday.
ESU's men won five individual events and the 4x100 relay and the women won two events, Mascoli in the 10,000 and senior Lynn Mayer in the high jump. Mayer became the first five-time All-American in school history by placing second at the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships last Saturday.
Mascoli, an All-American during the cross country season, ran a time of 35:44.20 to lower the school record of 35:53.20 that was set by Georgianna Messinger in 1986. She dropped more than one minute, 45 seconds from her best time last season. Sophomore Corinne Fitzgerald also ran a top 10 time in school history and finished second in 37:58.80.
Senior Negus Graham won the 200m dash in 21.80 and ran the third leg of the 4x100 relay after finishing fifth in the 400 to earn his third career All-America honor last week.
The relay squad of senior Asher Ashfield, freshman Keith Parker-Washington, Graham and junior Ian Melhorn ran the third-fastest time in school history in 41.17 seconds, below the NCAA provisional standard of 41.35. Ashfield and Melhorn comprised half of last year's All-America relay that finished eighth at the NCAA Championships, along with Andrew McCloskey and Chris Reddick.
Ashfield won the 100m dash in 11.16 seconds and Melhorn was second behind Graham in the 200 (21.93) and fourth behind Ashfield in the 100 (11.30). Sophomore Corey Young was second in the 110m hurdles in 15.41.

Junior Josh Hontz just missed the NCAA provisional mark of 193-7 in the javelin, placing second with a throw of 193-0, and sophomore Russell Hedrick was fourth with a mark of 184-10. Freshman James Homola was third in the pole vault at 14-5 1/4.

Brown led off for the 4x400 (4:05.48) and was followed by freshmen Christy Cardillo and Coleen Murphy and sophomore Tara Getz. Sophomore Lauren Ventrella, Brown, Pierantozzi and Murphy ran a time of 50.79 seconds in the 4x100.
