EASTON – Sophomores Rose Mascoli and Corinne Fitzgerald set school records in the 3000m run and 3000m steeplechase, respectively, to lead East Stroudsburg University at the Lafayette Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Mascoli ran a time of 9:54.65 to break Laura Mason's 27-year old record by just over five seconds and also clocked the second-fastest time in school history in the 1500m run in 4:41.14. She set the school record in the 10,000m run two weeks ago and was an All-American during the cross country season.
Fitzgerald lowered her own school record in the steeplechase by nearly 12 seconds, turning in a performance of 11:06.03 to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships later this spring. She ran 11:17.83 at the PSAC Championships in her final meet as a freshman.
Senior Lynn Mayer also hit an NCAA provisional standard, winning the high jump with a mark of 5-8 1/2. The mark is a quarter-inch away from the automatic standard and should give Mayer her seventh trip to the NCAA Championships, where she has won a school-record five All-America honors.
Fitzgerald and Mayer were the Warriors' two winners on the women's side. ESU had three top individual performances from its men – sophomore Mike Saparito in the 800, sophomore Amr Aldeen in the 3000 and sophomore Cory Young in the 110 hurdles – along with the 4x400 relay.
ESU's men placed third of seven schools in one of the only scored meets of the season prior to the PSAC Championships. Lehigh won with 143 points, followed by Shippensburg (126), ESU (98.33), Kutztown (77), Lafayette (66), Moravian (44.67) and Bloomsburg (31).
Shippensburg, the defending PSAC indoor and outdoor champion, won the women's side with 157 points. Lehigh (140), Lafayette (95), ESU (62), Kutztown (43), Georgian Court (36), Moravian (27), Ithaca (26) and Bloomsburg (3) comprised the rest of the field.
Mascoli was second in the 3000 and fourth in the 1500 as the only woman to score in two events for the Warriors. Sophomore Aniyah Williams was sixth in the 100m hurdles (15.54), freshman Laura Beimfohr was third in the pole vault (10-8), junior Devyn Emerich was fourth in the high jump (5-3), senior Danielle Laws was fourth in the hammer (152-6) and senior Jackie Berthelsen was sixth in the shot put (37-1 3/4).
The Warriors also showed well in both relays. The 4x400 group of freshmen Nicole Brown and Colleen Murphy, sophomore Tara Getz and Jasmine Johnson was second in 4:01.83 and the 4x100 quartet of sophomore Lauren Ventrella, Brown, freshman Rachel Pierantozzi and Johnson was third in 51.45.
ESU's men had top-six finishes in nearly every event, including some impressive times on the track. Senior Asher Ashfield was third in the 100m dash in 10.66 – the third-fastest in school history – and junior Ian Melhorn was fourth in 10.75 for ESU's fifth-fastest time. Ashfield was also second in the 200 (22.09) with Young placing sixth, along with his personal best of 14.99 to win the 110 hurdles. Senior Greg Pammer was sixth in 52.10 to score in the 400.
ESU won the 4x400 relay by more than six seconds as freshman Keith Parker-Washington, senior Negus Graham, Pammer and Melhorn put together four laps in 3:18.12.
Saparito won the 800 in 1:56.33 and Aldeen took the 3000 in 8:47.02 to lead three Warriors who finished in the top six – sophomore Mike Pereira was fourth (8:53.03) and junior Greg Laraia was fifth (8:53.36). Freshman James Romano was third in the 3000m steeplechase in 9:53.80.
In the field events, freshman Cory Kresge was second in the long jump (22-10), sophomore Kyle Soden was third in the high jump (6-4 1/4), junior Brandon Hillman was fifth in the triple jump (44-6) and freshman James Homola placed sixth in the pole vault (14-3 1/4).
Junior Josh Hontz was fourth in the javelin with a mark of 193-3, four inches off the NCAA provisional qualifying mark. Sophomore Russell Hedrick was sixth with a throw of 186-1.
The Warriors are back in action next Saturday at the Millersville Metrics.
